Keyword Research Without Ahrefs or Semrush (The Free Search Console Method)
You don't need a $140/month subscription to do real keyword research. Your own Search Console holds the highest-intent keywords you already rank for. Here's how to mine them.
Every keyword research tutorial starts the same way: "First, open Ahrefs." Then you find out Ahrefs is $129 a month, Semrush is more, and you're a founder who just wanted to know what to write about next.
Here's the secret the tutorials skip: your single best keyword research tool is free, you already have access to it, and it knows something no paid tool does — exactly which keywords your site already ranks for. That's Google Search Console, and it's where you should start.
Why your own data beats a big database
Paid tools estimate. They crawl the web, model search volumes, and guess where you might rank. Useful — but it's inference.
Search Console reports reality. It shows the actual queries that brought up your pages, your actual position, and your actual clicks. And the keywords where you already rank on page 2 are the fastest wins in all of SEO, because Google has already decided you're relevant. You're not starting from zero — you're closing a small gap.
Start there before you spend a cent.
Method 1: Mine the keywords you already rank for
Open Search Console → Performance → Search results, set the range to Last 3 months, and go to the Queries tab.
Find the page-2 goldmine. Add a filter: Position → Greater than 10 and Less than 21. Sort by impressions. These are keywords where you're one nudge from page one — the highest-ROI list you'll ever build. (Full walkthrough: [finding low-hanging-fruit keywords](/blog/low-hanging-fruit-keywords-search-console).)
Find the CTR leaks. Filter Position to 4–10 and scan for low CTR. You rank well but aren't getting clicked — a title problem, not a content problem.
Find the almost-ranking terms. Look at queries with real impressions but no clicks. Google is testing your page for these. A little more relevance could tip them over.
Method 2: Expand with free discovery tools
Once you know your winning themes, broaden them — for free.
- Google autocomplete: start typing your keyword and read the suggestions. That's real demand, straight from Google
- People Also Ask: search your term and open the PAA boxes. Each question is a keyword and a subheading you can write
- Related searches: scroll to the bottom of the results page for more angles
- Free tool tiers: most keyword tools offer a limited number of free searches a day — enough to spot-check volume on your best ideas
- Reddit, forums, and communities: the exact phrasing your customers use, which is often what they type into Google
Method 3: Read your competitors' free signals
You don't need a paid crawler to learn from competitors.
- Look at their page titles and H2s for pages ranking above you — those reveal the keywords they're targeting
- Check which of their pages show up when you search your core terms
- Note the questions they answer that you don't
How to judge a keyword without volume data
Paid tools hand you a search volume number. Without one, judge by proxy:
- Intent match — does this keyword match what your product actually helps with? A lower-volume, high-intent keyword beats a high-volume, irrelevant one every time
- Your existing position — already on page 2? That's a strong signal it's winnable and worth real demand
- Impressions in Search Console — this is your volume signal for terms you already rank for. High impressions = real demand, no estimate needed
- Specificity — "project management software for architects" converts better and ranks easier than "software"
Turn research into a plan
A keyword list isn't a strategy. Rank your findings and act:
- This week: the page-2 keywords with the highest impressions. Rewrite titles, add depth, add internal links
- This month: the CTR-leak pages. Rewrite titles and descriptions
- This quarter: new content for the high-intent themes you don't cover yet
Where a tool saves you the grind
The free method works — it's genuinely how a lot of good SEO gets done. The catch is consistency. Pulling this data, filtering it, and re-checking every week is a chore most founders abandon after a month.
That's the gap [Insight Engine](/features/page-2-rescue) fills. It runs this exact analysis on your Search Console data automatically — surfacing page-2 keywords ranked by impact, flagging CTR leaks, and telling you which three to fix this week, with the rewrites attached. Same method, none of the manual repetition. But if you'd rather do it by hand, everything above is free and it works. Start with your page-2 list today.
